Rockmelons are juicy and delicious. Good rockmelons are heavy for their size, firm, and on the yellowish side of green. They contain lots of water (90%), Vitamin A, C, and potassium. I didn’t much like them as a kid (I preferred watermelon) but apparently I’m on my own there.

Pages 203-252 of my old What to Expect When You’re Expecting book are missing, which is most of the seventh, eighth, and nine months, but I do remember feeling like I was carrying a rockmelon when I was eight months pregnant with my real babies. I also had Braxton Hicks contractions. Braxton Hicks are not labour contractions, just practice. They feel like a tightening across your tummy, a bit like the feeling of panic I’ve been having as I contemplate my book baby going out into the world. Happily, it is in good hands and has been read by the likes of Ara Jansen, the well-known West Australian writer and journalist, and Michele Allen, a NSW book dragon. They have been nice to it.

You can now pre-order The River Mouth at your favourite bookstore or online distributor.
